VMware Certification Path – Your Ultimate Guide for 2024

VMware Certification Path - Your ultimate Guide

Starting a journey to increase your IT skills and credentials can be challenging. If you want to specialize in VMware technologies, you have come to the right place. In this article on VMware Certification Path, we will explore a complete resource created to help you understand VMware certifications thoroughly.

Earning VMware certifications can increase your professional credibility and open up new opportunities, whether you are just beginning or looking to advance in your career. This guide provides everything you need to know, from the basics of VMware to a breakdown of various certification tracks and levels. We will also cover essential areas like Data Center Virtualization, Network Virtualization, Cloud Management and Automation, and more, all presented to help you achieve your VMware certification goals.

What is VMware?

VMware is a software company that offers virtualization and cloud computing software and services. Its software allows businesses to run multiple virtual computers on a single physical computer, sharing the resources of that single computer across multiple systems. VMware also offers various other products and services, including software-defined data center solutions and hybrid cloud platforms. Its technology helps organizations streamline their IT infrastructure and improve efficiency.

VMware is a standalone company that is publicly traded and sells software. This software is not free or open source. It’s available for sale and is enterprise-grade, designed for enterprise-grade virtualization.

6 VMware Certification Paths

There are 6 VMware certification tracks for proving your expertise in using VMware products and services.

VMware Certification Tracks 1
VMware Certification Tracks 2
VMware Certification Tracks 3

Data Center Virtualization

The first path is the data center virtualization track. Within the data center virtualization track, the main product is vSphere. You should understand how you can design the vSphere solution for customers in day zero and day one scenarios. Moreover, You need design knowledge, installation knowledge, and knowledge of how to configure the vCenter server by deploying the virtual machine and configuring the cluster. You must also know how to manage all our ESXi hosts and virtual machines using vCenter. Some basic troubleshooting knowledge is also required. These are all the concepts covered within a data center virtualization track.

Data Center Virtualization has 6 products;

Network Virtualization

The second one is the network virtualization track. Data center virtualization is more about server virtualization, while network virtualization is more about the network layer. In server virtualization, most of the hardware components are virtualized.

Virtualization is a technology that allows multiple operating systems to operate on a single physical machine. It creates a more efficient and cost-effective IT environment. Whatever the hardware components, you have them virtualized in the VM. For example, CPUs become virtual CPUs, disks become virtual disks, memory becomes virtual memory, and network code becomes a virtual network. Similarly, within the network virtualization track, all the physical network devices you have in our data center environment become virtualized. Network virtualization mainly covers topics like logical switching, distributed firewalls, distributed logical routers, network load balancers, and advanced network load balancer concepts.

Network Virtualization has 3 products;

Cloud Management and Automation (CMA)

Another track is cloud management and automation. Earlier, this track was known as vRealize. But recently, they changed the name from vRealize to ARIA.

The main product name within a cloud management automation track is ARIA Automation. Using ARIA automation, you can automate our data center virtualization components, network virtualization, and storage virtualization. Most IT infrastructure activities can be automated using ARIA automation from day one.

You need to know about design, installation, configuration, optimization, and support for this track. If you have the skills, you are ready to apply for the CMA platform certification.

Cloud Management and Automation (CMA) has 4 products;

Application Modernization

The next one is the application modernization track. As you are aware, the application definition has changed. It is moving from monolithic to tier-based. Nowadays, all applications are containerized, running like a microservices architecture.

VMware’s main solution product within this application modernization is the Tanzu portfolio. You should know how to develop, manage, and migrate applications like monolithic to containers or tier-based applications to containerization. If you have these skills, you are good to apply for your certification within the application modernization track.

Security

Another important track is the security track. Every organization must maintain some security regulations wherever you have within our data center, like data center virtualization, network virtualization, CMA, and application modernization. It is one of the key components. Within the security track, you should know about some key concepts, like VMware Carbon Black, and some security features within VMware solutions. You should know about VMware key products, security information, and how you can configure, manage, and support security features.

End-User Computing

Last but not least, another track is the end-user computing track. This is like desktop virtualization. Within desktop virtualization, VMware’s main product for management solutions is Horizon. Recently, VMware released the latest version of Horizon, Horizon 8. As with other tracks, you should know about design, installation, management, and user. It depends on your hands-on experience, and you can choose the relevant track and do your certification to grow your career and get better prospects.

VMware Certification Levels

Now, let’s talk about VMware certification levels.

VMware Certification Levels

VMware Certified Technical Associate (VCTA)

VMware Certified Technical Associate (VCTA) is the entry-level certification. It’s mainly for operators. Once you complete the VCTA certification, you are eligible to apply for the second level of certification, VMware Certified Professional (VCP). It’s more suitable for administrators and engineers. You can choose any relevant tracks, but the certification names are the same.

VMware Certified Professional (VCP)

VMware Certified Professional (VCP) is a mid-level certification for IT experts who install, configure, manage, and optimize VMware solutions. It requires hands-on experience with VMware technologies and passing a VMware-authorized training course and exams.

VMware Certified Advanced Professional (VCAP)

The next certification is the VMware Certified Advanced Professional certification. It is also more suitable for administrators, engineers, and solution architects. This advanced professional certification has two exams.

  • VCAP design
  • VCAP deployment

If you complete the VCAP design and deploy two certifications, you can receive a separate milestone from VMware called VMware Certified Implementation Expert. When you complete these two certificates, you will receive the implementation expert.

VMware Certified Design Expert (VCDX)

VMware Certified Design Expert (VCDX) is more relevant for enterprise architects. This is the highest level of VMware certification, and it recognizes IT professionals who design, build, and manage VMware solutions and systems.

These levels are consistent across VMware’s various certification tracks, which include Data Center Virtualization, Network Virtualization, Cloud Management and Automation, Security, Digital Workspace, and Application Modernization. Each track validates capabilities specific to different VMware technologies and solutions.

How to Earn VMware Certifications?

Here is how you can earn VMware certifications.

Data Center Virtualization Track

Training

The basic certification is a technical associate within a data center virtualization track. However, the initial VMware recommendation is generally to attend training at the beginning. Once you attend the training, you are eligible to write the VCTA exam. And finally, once you pass, they will give you a VCTA certification badge. After that, you will get some VMware VCTA experience and be eligible to write for your next-level certification, VCP.

For the VCP, training is required. If you notice, there is no requirement for VCTA. Without training, you can write VCTA. However, for the VCP, training is a must. If you do not have any training experience, you should have trained first. Only then are you eligible to write for the VCP certification. However, that will be enough if you have hands-on experience with daily tasks. Otherwise, you have to complete the training first. Then, you can take the VCP exam.

Advanced Skills

Another recommended course is to help VCPA professionals gain advanced skills. You must also attend some VMware design workshops to get a full picture of advanced professional knowledge. Within a week, you have two exams. One is related to deployment, and the other is related to design. Deploy means it’s more on the implementation side. Design refers to how you can prepare a solution.

If you do these two certifications, you will get two different certification badge

  • VCAP-DCV Deploy
  • CAP-DCV Design.

VMware also provides an additional badge when you complete these two certifications called VMware Certified Implementation Expert.

Once you have an implementation expert certificate, you are eligible to apply for a VCDX certification. You have to submit the original design. You must submit the original design so they can call you for a design defense session. Once your session is qualified, you will get a certification as a VCDX design expert.
